What are my rights when I deposit an item into the UMUC Digital Repository?
You retain copyright of your work. All that is asked is that you must grant the University of Maryland University College the non-exclusive right to preserve and distribute your work in the digital repository by signing the Digital Repository License. You can sign other agreements with other organizations granting them some or all of your rights.
How do I know if I have the rights to deposit an item?
You must make this determination yourself by examining any agreements you signed with a publisher. If you do not have a copy of what you signed, you may request a copy from the publisher. Many publishers do allow for a copy of your work to be placed in your institution's digital repository, so be sure to check for language to this effect in the contract. You can also check the SHERPA/RoMEO directory of publisher copyright policies for this information.
What if the publisher owns all of my rights?
If you signed over all rights to the publisher, you can request permission to deposit the item into the UMUC Digital Repository from the publisher. You may use this sample letter as a template for your request. You must furnish this permission before submitting an item to the repository.
What happens to my deposited works if I leave the University of Maryland University College?
Your items will be retained in the UMUC Digital Repository even after you leave UMUC.
What if I have a co-author who isn't affiliated with the University of Maryland University College. Can I still deposit the work?
As long as your co-author agrees with the item being submitted and signs the Digital Repository License, the item may be submitted. Depositing items into another institution's repository is allowed.
